Brewers Play Out String This Week

MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) The Milwaukee Brewers were eliminated from playoff contention yesterday, after getting shut out at home by the Houston Astros, 7-to-nothing. The Brewers were all but eliminated in mid-August – but they won 24-of-30 games to get back in the race for the National League’s final Wild Card, before dropping three-of-their-last-nine.

Left-fielder Ryan Braun said it was amazing that Milwaukee got back into the playoff chase, and everybody on the team’s proud of it. Manager Ron Roenicke would not say that the Brewers ran out-of-gas. He said the team was still high on adrenaline, but made a series of mistakes.

Jordan Lyles threw his first Major League shutout for Houston – and he also homered for the first time in his career. Fernando Martinez, Jed Lowrie, and Matt Dominguez also went yard for the Astros. Mike Fiers took the loss, giving up five runs in six innings. He struck 10, as his record fell to 9-and-10 overall and 0-and-3 in his last four outings.

Despite their 53-and-106 record, Houston took two-of-three from the Brewers. The Astros are hoping to go .500 for September, to gain a little momentum as the head to the American League next year. Milwaukee has three home games left, starting tonight against San Diego. The Brewers need to win one of those contests to finish above .500 – something they didn’t think possible just over a month ago. Right-hander Shaun Marcum will start for the Crew tonight against Padres’ southpaw Clayton Richard.
