WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - A 3rd Grade teacher in Wausau got a big surprise today with the help of OfficeMax.
Teacher Christine Smith from Grant Elementary was the winner of the 5th annual "A Day Made Better" charity drive from OfficeMax. She was surprised today at the end of the usual monthly assembly by staff with a gift of a new office chair and $1,500 in school supplies. In addition, Grant Elementary got supplies for the whole school thanks to a donation drive at the Rib Mountain Store.
Dawn Kanitz from OfficeMax says Smith was nominated for the award by her principal, and that this is just one of hundreds of awards being given out today. "We want to help highlight the teachers and the schools that are doing outstanding work not just for their students but for the community."
Smith says she was flabbergasted by the award. "WOW! I had no idea that this was happening." But she says this award isn't just for her. "Those kind words they said about me apply to everyone here at this building. All of the adults here do so much work to help students."
The donated office supplies will be going towards the needs of students who are not able to get school supplies at home.
