Hi tech tools track historic Marshfield sites

by

MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU)  -   A technology first developed by Toyota Automotive and widely used in Japan for almost everything is being used to tell the story of historic buildings in Marshfield.

“QR” or Quick Response Codes will be posted in many storefront windows in downtown and historic residential structures, and can be scanned with a smart phone for stories of a building’s past.

According to Marshfield historian Vicky Schnitzler, “What we are trying to do here, and how we are using QR Codes, is to document the history of Marshfield businesses, and make them digitally accessible to the public.” Several historic homes such as the Upham Mansion are also slated for inclusion in the project as well.

Schnitzler says after learning of Marshfield’s use of QR Codes for historic preservation purposes, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Madison’s Historic Districts Project, and Marshfield’s Wildwood Zoo are all considering the use of QR Codes for projects they’re undertaking.

If you don’t have a smart phone, you can check out the information at www.MarshfieldGenealogy.com.
