Local agencies help fire victims

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -  Sunday night, a Wausau apartment complex was heavily damaged by fire, putting several people out of their homes. The blaze at Tamarack Heights Apartments of of 56th Avenue started around 11:00 p.m. A short time later, local American Red Cross staff were among the on-scene helpers. Lora Hainy says local disasters like this one affect many people, and they are glad to help. “We were in contact an on scene last night when the fire broke out, and have been providing direct financial assistance for food and clothing, and then did also provide immediate short-term housing assistance for those families that needed it. We are continuing to partner with our other community agencies such as Salvation Army to address the longer-term needs that may develop as individuals begin to look at their longer term recovery plans.”

All of the families inside were evacuated. Several lost all of their possessions. Hainy says they are working with a local hotel to temporarily house nine adult victims and one child that had nowhere else to stay.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
