EAU CLAIRE, WI  (WSAU)  -  A man killed during a standoff with police in Eau Claire Friday was from Wausau. 24-year-old Christian A.N. Peterson was apparently involved in a crime spree and car chase. Police told WEAU-TV that several crimes took place prior to the shooting incident that killed Peterson. He was involved in two separate hit-and-run accidents at around 6:30 that evening, and fled the second crash on foot when he entered a home armed with a gun, confronted the resident, and took the resident’s vehicle. That led to a high speed chase in Eau Claire’s downtown area which stopped when an officer hit the car Peterson had taken.

Peterson grabbed his gun and fled towards a restaurant, where he tried to climb into a truck that was stopped at the drive-thru window. A police officer yelled several times for Peterson to drop his weapon, but Peterson instead moved towards the officer. The officer shot the still-armed Peterson, who died a short time later at an area hospital.

Peterson was wanted by Marathon County authorities for escape. Judge Vincent Howard issued an arrest warrant for him on October 2nd. Peterson had a long history of past criminal charges including making and trafficking methamphetamines, burglary, and resisting arrest.
