MADISON, WI (WSAU) The nation’s longest-running college football rivalry will be renewed on Saturday in Madison, when the Wisconsin Badgers host Minnesota. It’s the 122nd time the Badgers and Gophers will meet. The prize is Paul Bunyan’s Axe, which has been held in the U-W’s trophy cases for the last eight years.
Wisconsin has won 15-of-the-last-17 matchups with Minnesota, but the Gophers still hold an overall lead in the series at 58-55-and-8.
The Ax has been up for grabs since 1948. Before that, Wisconsin and Minnesota played for the “Slab of Bacon.” It was lost in 1943, but it turned up in ’94.
This year, the Badgers come in with a 5-and-2 overall record and two straight Big Ten victories. Minnesota has lost two straight, but is still 4-and-2 overall.
