No IR For Woodson

GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) Green Bay Packers’ defensive back Charles Woodson will stay on the roster as he recovers from a broken collarbone suffered in Sunday’s win at Saint Louis. The 36-year-old veteran showed no signs of the injury during the game – but coach Mike McCarthy said Woodson was nervous about it on Sunday night. And an X-ray yesterday confirmed the break.

McCarthy said it’s not as significant as the same injury Woodson suffered during Super Bowl-45 in February of 2011, when he missed the entire second half in the Packers’ title victory over Pittsburgh. But the new injury is enough for Woodson to stay out for at least six weeks. McCarthy hopes Woodson can return for the end of the regular season and a possible playoff run.

Rookie defensive backs Jerron McMillan and Casey Hayward can expect more playing time in the interim, along with second-year pros Davon House and M-D Jennings. They’ll fill Woodson’s safety spot in the base defense, and his coverage of the slot receiver on passing downs.

Woodson has one-and-a-half sacks and an interception in the Packers’ first seven games. He has not allowed a touchdown pass this year, but he gave up at least three passes of 20 yards or more. And Woodson has committed three coverage penalties that were accepted.

Woodson is a 15-year N-F-L veteran, an eight-time Pro Bowler, and a former defensive player-of-the-year. He has 55 interceptions in over 200 career games with the Packers and Oakland.
