WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - Midnight has passed, and so has the opportunity for Wausau residents to register extra cats and dogs.
As of midnight April 1st, the city now has a two dog and three cat limit. Alderman Keene Winters says people have had ample time to know about the changes. "If they license their animals by March 31st, they could be grandfathered and we would not enforce the limit on them." Winter says the city will now be stringently enforcing the ordinance. The March 31st deadline is regulated by a state statute on counties.
The recent changes to the pet ordinance also require veterinarians to report vaccination and ownership data to the city. That means households that have too many pets won’t be able to hide them anymore. The council will be using the license fees and fines generated from the ordinance to pay for funding an animal control program for the city.
