Adults more guilty than teens at texting and driving

UNDATED (WSAU) -  Texting and driving is dangerous, and can lead to serious consequences for people that cause accidents because of the distraction. If you think young people are the big problem, think again.

A new study released by AT&T found 49 percent of adult commuters admit texting and driving, and 43 percent of teens admit doing the same thing. Of the adults that responded, 98 percent know it’s unsafe but do it anyway.

Jonathan Adkins from the Governors Highway Safety Association in Washington D.C. says people tend to justify their texting saying things like “there’s not a lot of traffic”, “I’m not speeding” or “I’m at a light.” He says sending or receiving a text takes your eyes off the road for an average of 4-point-6 seconds.

Sixty percent of adult drivers say they didn’t text and drive three years ago and forty percent admit it’s a habit.

There are serious consequences for causing a crash, injury, or death if texting and driving. The fines are big, and texting drivers can go to prison if the crash victim dies.
