Wisconsin prison inmates getting training to jump into manufacturing


OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) - Inmates at three Wisconsin prisons are learning basic math-and-manufacturing skills – and they’re training for jobs which are vacant because employers cannot find enough qualified workers.

Lakeshore Technical College is running the program, with help from the state departments of Corrections and Workforce Development.

A full program has been offered at the Oshkosh prison.Female inmates at Taycheedah are in their third week of training.

The Kettle Moraine prison also offers the program. The inmates can earn college credits by completing the program, which involves seven hours of a class each day for six weeks.

At the end of the training, prisoners must pass a hands-on assessment – which includes repairing factory machines.

So far, all Oshkosh inmates have passed.
