Marathon County investigating Wittenberg woman's death, man in custody

ELDERON, WI (WSAU) -  Marathon County investigators are continuing to gather information about a Sunday fatality that apparently started when a woman fell out of a truck near Elderon.

Chief Deputy Scott Parks says 27-year-old Catherine F. Borchardt of Wittenberg died from the injuries, which was initially reported to Shawano County authorities.

The complaint says 27-year-old driver Brandon Bender of Antigo is charged with Operating under the influence of a controlled substance causing injury, 2nd offense.  Bender told investigators he fell asleep and awakened in the ditch to find his girlfriend missing.  Bender says he turned the truck around and located Borchardt lying in the intersection of State Highway 49 and 153 near Elderon just after 2:30 in the morning.  He claims two men helped put the injured woman back in his truck, and that he called 9-1-1 when he got Borchardt to her home and realized how bad the injuries were.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday to determine if Borchardt’s injuries are consistent with what has been reported.  Results of that autopsy have not been released.
