The U.S. Treasury Department has confirmed what Reuters reported earlier in the week: the government signed off on Beyoncé and Jay-Z 's trip to Cuba last week.

The department has sent a letter to Mario Diaz-Balart , one of two representatives from heavily Cuban districts in South Florida who wanted to know what kind of license or special permission Bey and Jay had allowing them to travel to the island.

The letter states that the couple had visited Cuba "pursuant to an educational exchange trip organized by a group" authorized by the Office of Foreign Assets Control. The letter adds that the trip was intended to promote "people-to-people contact" in the country.

The U.S. government's ongoing embargo against Cuba prohibits travel to the nation for tourism.

Beyoncé and her husband were spotted out and about in Havana last week as they celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary.
