Packers Begin Off-Season Workouts Today

GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) The Green Bay Packers will have only three new players when they begin their first off-season conditioning workouts today. General manager Ted Thompson signed only one free agent with any real N-F-L experience – tight end Matthew Mulligan from Saint Louis. The Pack also signed corner Loyce Means. And they brought in kicker Giorgio Tavecchio to give Mason Crosby his first competition in six years.

Thompson has saved most of his salary cap room to re-sign his biggest stars – quarterback Aaron Rodgers and linebacker Clay Matthews. Both signings were expected to be announced together, possibly during this training period.

For the first two weeks, only strength-and-conditioning exercises are allowed under the league’s collective bargaining agreement – and position coaches cannot watch them. Packers’ coach Mike McCarthy says he has made adjustments in his training techniques, with the goal of reducing the large numbers of injuries which hit the team in two of the previous three seasons.

The Packers will keep their closest watch on players coming back from major injuries. They include linebacker Desmond Bishop, tackles Bryan Bulaga and Derek Sherrod, linebacker Nick Perry, and safety Sean Richardson.
