400 Wisconsin runners escape injury in Boston

by

UNDATED (WSAU)  Nearly 400 Wisconsinites were in Boston Monday, when explosions caused chaos at the finish line of the city’s annual marathon, killing at least three people and seriously wounding over a hundred more. Chad Gruett of Appleton was among those from the Badger State running in the Boston Marathon. He had finished the race about 45 minutes before the explosions and was relaxing with friends just a few blocks away. He says they did not feel or hear the blast, but saw reports on TV and then started to see first responders rushing to the finish line.

WSAW-TV news reporter Madeline Anderson tells us that her mother Judy Gundersen from Madison had finished the course and was on her way back to her hotel when it happened.

Another local runner, Justin Goetz of Marshfield, says he finished the race before the explosion. Erin Verkerke of Wausau said some of the runners who finished the race earlier weren't aware of what happened -- she crossed the finish line about a half-hour before the two blasts.

Dr. Michael Gordon, the team doctor for the Milwaukee Bucks, was part of a group that was running in the marathon. He tells WTMJ-TV he and his team had just finished the race when the blasts occurred.
