Joint dispatch center closer after Portage County Board approval

STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) -  Portage County and the City of Stevens Point are another step closer to merging their emergency dispatch communications facilities. The County Board unanimously endorsed the joint dispatch concept Tuesday, and the City has already done so.

County Executive Patty Dreier says both governmental bodies are going in the same direction, but there’s still work to do and details to work out. “As soon as we have these facts together and listed in a written form, apendacies that go with another resolution, we’ll all bring them back to our respective bodies. The County Board will see it and then the City Council will see it, and then that’s where I guess the final blessings come.”

Dreier is encouraged the process will move quickly now, but they are taking care not to leave out details and also to make sure the changes don’t negatively impact emergency response crews. “We’re making great progress on working out the details. It’s on a fast track, in fact, it is possible that it could even be as early as this summer. We just want to make sure we don’t jeopardize any of the responders out there or anybody calling 9-1-1. We want to make sure it’s done right, done well, done completely, and if we can do it faster, we will.”

Fine points of the agreement are being discussed by committees and working groups.
