WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - A Wausau missing persons case is now being investigated as a homicide. Wausau Police say 58-year-old Tong Pao Hang from St. Paul Minnesota is missing and presumed dead.
A suspect is in custody. Wausau Police Captain Bryan Hilts says Milwaukee Police apprehended 26-year-old Kou Thao of Wausau Thursday morning along with his girlfriend in a car stolen from Wausau. The girlfriend has since been released, and is believed to be back in the Wausau area.
The focus of the investigation changed after a report of a gunshot in the basement of a Wausau home on April 7th. Family members reported Hang missing, but it wasn't until officers were told about the gunshot that they suspected foul play. Hilts says evidence has been found in the basement of a home at 402 Chicago Avenue in Wausau, and in the car recovered in Milwaukee. Some of that evidence includes what investigators believe is blood. He will not say at this time if they have the victim's body. The Wisconsin Crime Lab is helping process evidence from the house and the stolen car.
