UNDATED (WTVB) - It certainly won’t qualify for the value meal menu, as least not for a while. Scientists in London will be cooking and sampling the world's first test tube burger today. The five-ounce beef patty cost more than $380,000 to produce and is made of thousands of tiny meat strips grown from cow stem cells. Dutch scientist Mark Post thinks his creation could mean lab grown meat will start showing up in supermarkets in about ten years. He's hoping the test tube burger will be a first step toward creating ethical and environmentally-friendly meat.
Animal rights groups like PETA support the meat experiment because it might lead to a major reduction in large scale factory farming and what they consider cruel treatment of animals.
