Stevens Point school district gets state grant funding to plan new charter school

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) - School officials in Stevens Point are getting a grant to put together a charter school for middle schoolers.

The Department of Public instruction has awarded a $225,000 grant to the district to plan out their new Expeditionary Learning School. Ben Franklin junior high principal Connie Negaard says they're aiming to create a school much like the one serving middle-schoolers in Marathon. "Marathon has adopted this program and they converted their entire middle school into an expeditionary learning charter school."

The program has students working on a semester long project each year that encompasses the curriculum that would normally be taught in classrooms in a traditional school. Negaard says that can help some students. "We have wondered if our students could be more successful with a better delivery system, and the expeditionary learning is very different from anything we offer right now."

The grant money will help the district draw up a charter and set up the board to run the school. Negaard says they're hoping to have it up and running in the fall of 2014.
