Names released in Taylor County car versus pedestrian fatal

GILMAN, Wis. (WSAU) -- An Illinois man is dead and two others injured after car struck two pedestrians in Taylor County Friday afternoon.

This happened at County Line Road and Lou Avenue about nine miles west of Gilman. The incident was very close to the Chippewa-Taylor county line.

Deputies say several hunters were standing on or near the edge of the road when the vehicle approached them at a high rate of speed. All but two of the hunting party were able to jump out of the path of the vehicle.

Taylor County Sheriff’s deputies say a 52-year-old Juan A. Salinas of Roscoe, Illinois was pronounced dead at the scene. 53-year-old Fernando Salinas of Roscoe, Illinois was taken to Memorial Health Center in Medford, and then flown by Life Link 3 Helicopter to Aspirus Wausau Hospital for further treatment of leg injuries. He is in serious but stable condition.

The driver of the car is 42-year-old James L. Winchel from Sheldon, Wisconsin. He was flown from the scene by Mayo Helicopter directly to Eau Claire Luther Hospital, and remains in stable condition.

Gilman Fire and Ambulance, Medford Ambulance, Wisconsin State Patrol, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department and Taylor County Sheriff’s Department officials responded along with the two medical helicopters. When the initial call for help was made, dispatchers couldn’t tell which county the incident occurred in, so everybody responded.

The incident remains under investigation.  Taylor County deputies believe excessive speed and alcohol may led to these deaths and injuries.
