Whooping Cough advisory issued in Wood County

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (WSAU) -- A health advisory has been issued due to more cases of Pertussis, or Whooping Cough.

The Wood County Health Department has had more cases reported, and they’re urging people with the symptoms to take the right precautions. Early symptoms are much like catching a cold, but the mild cough progressively worsens to severe coughing spells. These coughing spells can include whooping and vomiting.

Health officials say the illness can last nearly six weeks, and is contagious if left untreated. Anyone with these symptoms should stay isolated from other people except for seeing their doctor. Antibiotics do help provide relief, and help keep the illness from spreading to others.

More information about Pertussis is available on the Internet from the Wood County Health Department and from the Center for Disease Control.
