Constant snowfall stressing maintenance budgets

MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) -- So how are local street departments coping with all that snowfall? In Marshfield, Street Superintendent Brian Panzer says December is almost always snowy, but this year’s pattern of small, but almost constant, snowfalls is affecting the snow removal budget. According to Panzer, “We just recently have taken some actions to transfer funds from some of our other budgets, from of our street maintenance and stormwater maintenance budgets, into our snow and ice control budget so that we’d have funding until the end of the year.” Panzer says road salt supplies are holding up so far, and that area residents seem to stay out of the way of snow removal efforts. According to Panzer, merchants are maintaining sidewalks in Marshfield’s downtown much better this year since fines have doubled for non-compliance with the city’s snow removal ordinance. Typically, 30 to 40% of the winter’s snow removal occurs during the month of December.
