Perez baby death trial delayed again

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- Some court cases take longer to complete because of expert witness scheduling for trials. That’s exactly why a Portage County case has been stalled again.

Reymundo Perez is accused of causing the death of his girlfriend’s two-year-old boy, Felix Espinoza-Villa, by throwing him to the ground because he would not stop crying October 26th of 2011. The child died two days later.

The court appointed a doctor as an expert defense witness, but that doctor isn’t available until June.

Prosecutor Veronica Isherwood told the court the mother of the victim is extremely concerned because the case has been pending longer than the baby was alive. She suggested the defense get a different expert witness. Judge John Finn allowed the delay, moving the start of the 8-day trial from February 26th to June 3rd.
