STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- If you're heading out tonight to celebrate the New Year, local police are reminding you to plan ahead.
Portage County Chief Deputy Dan Kontos says they usually don't see too many problems for New Year's Eve. "Our hope is they all plan ahead of time so they know they're going out how they get home safely. And to make sure that they have somebody in their party, if they're driving back, who hasn't celebrated too much and can get everyone home safely."
Kontos adds that they really won't be sending any more officers out. "New Years is actually one of those evenings where people plan what they're going to do for the evening, so we don't have the unusual traffic crashes or incidents that are out there. There will be some and we are ready for that, we have the manpower for that."
Kontos reminds those heading out to celebrate to take advantage of the Tavern League's Safe Ride Home programs and taxi services that will be available to get you home if you don't have a designated driver, and hopes everyone stays safe tonight.
