WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) Last week a group of volunteers took part in Wausau’s annual point-in-time survey on homelessness. They spent Wednesday evening and early Thursday morning looking for people who were living on the streets.
They found 9 people. Some spent the night in foyers of businesses. Others were inside 24-hour Laundromats or in the parking lots of businesses that are open all night. A newspaper report says one man was living inside a snow-cave that he made. It was -8 degrees on the night of the homeless count.
The homeless count gets reported to the Department of Housing and Urban Development to see if the city is eligible to federal funding for homeless initiatives. The city’s new warming shelter opened the night after the homeless count.
