PLOVER, WI (WSAU) - One person’s pets is another person’s problem. That’s what happened east of Plover, where Darlene Flatoff had pet rats. Not one or two, but over 200 cute, cuddly, little rats.
OK, maybe not cute and cuddly. Many of them weren't little, either.
At one time, Flatoff had over 350 pet rats. She owns her mobile home in the Birch Tree Estates park off Highway 54 a few miles east of Plover, but the park and it’s other occupants are more than a little concerned about what they call a rat infestation.
Humane Society officials tried unsuccessfully working with Flatoff, but the County Health Department got involved recently since inspectors deemed the trailer unfit to live in because of what they called “inappropriate elimination of sewage.”
Flatoff was evicted from her home this week, and officials are seeking to have the trailer condemned. Meanwhile, the rats have not been evicted. Their fate will likely be determined at a February 21st Town of Plover public hearing about the trailer.
