MADISON, WI (WSAU) Based on recommendations from Texas-based researcher James Kroll, Governor Scott Walker’s executive budget will reportedly order the DNR to create new deer mini-hunters.
It will also include funding for updated state maps and continued chronic wasting disease surveillance.
Walker says his budget will authorize the Department of Natural Resources to establish a deer management assistance program. It would let landowners and hunting clubs run their own mini-hunts after consulting with state biologists. They would need to share data on the gender, weight and antler spread of the deer taken.
Twenty states currently have similar program in place. This one wouldn’t be implemented until next year.
