It's true what they say: you don't have to be a Grammy winner to reap the benefits of the Grammy Awards. New figures show that nearly every artist who appeared on the Grammy telecast on February 10 experienced a significant increase in album and single sales...and even artists who are no longer with us enjoyed a sales bump.
According to Nielsen Soundscan , Taylor Swift , who opened the show, enjoyed a 10 percent increase in sales for her song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," while sales of her album Red are up by 20 percent. She actually did win a Grammy, but her award wasn't presented on camera, so many viewers were unaware of it.
Same goes for two other acts who performed on the telecast but failed to win anything: Maroon 5 saw sales of their single "Daylight" increase by 28 percent, while The Lumineers notched a 21 percent increase in sales of their album, and a 25 percent increase for their single "Ho Hey."
On the telecast, an all-star tribute to the late reggae legend Bob Marley , featuring Bruno Mars , Rihanna and Sting , resulted in an 81 percent sales increase for Marley's biggest-selling album, Legend. And a similar tribute to the late drummer Levon Helm , from the group The Band , resulted in a 203 percent sales increase for that group's greatest hits package.
However, the biggest sales increases went to the night's on-camera winners. For example:
--fun. won Song of the Year for "We Are Young" and Best New Artist; sales of "We Are Young" increased 182 percent, while sales of their album Some Nights increased by 87 percent. Sales of the song they performed on the telecast, "Carry On," increased by 138 percent.
--Gotye won three Grammys, including Record of the Year for "Somebody That I Used to Know"; sales of that track increased 101 percent, while sales of his album Making Mirrors increased 124 percent.
--Kelly Clarkson won for her album Stronger ; sales increased 51 percent.
--Mumford & Sons won Album of the Year for their disc Babel ; its sales increased 50 percent, while sales of "I Will Wait," which they performed on the telecast, increased by 116 percent. There was also a 37 percent spike in sales of the band's previous album, Sigh No More, which came out three years ago.
-- Kanye West & Jay-Z won three awards, one of which was presented on camera; sales of their album Watch the Throne increased by 139 percent.
