Marathon County sheriff to retire earlier than planned

WAUSAU, WI (WTAQ) - A central Wisconsin sheriff says he’ll retire soon, as his wife could be heading to prison for stealing painkillers.

Marathon County Sheriff Randy Hoenisch told reporters Friday he was planning to retire in April – but he thought he’d better leave sooner.

His wife Kim is scheduled to be sentenced in late April, after pleading no contest to burglary and the theft of pills from offenders she supervised as a former state probation agent. She faces up to 18 months behind bars, and Hoenisch says he plans to spend full-time with his family once his retirement paperwork is complete.

He’s been the sheriff in Wausau since 2001.

Recently, the Wausau Daily Herald found that Hoenisch had only spent two hours in his office since the first of the year. He admitted spending more time with his wife, trying to get her off painkillers.

But Hoenisch said the report was not fair, because it did not reflect time he spent in the community and at training sessions. Still, he said it’s not fair for his deputies to face distractions – and it’s another reason he felt it was right to leave office now.

The 57-year-old Hoenisch has been with the Marathon County sheriff’s department for four decades.
