MADISON, WI (WSAU) The Wisconsin men’s basketball team will start its Big Ten Conference schedule tonight when it hosts Penn State. The Badgers are 9-and-4 overall, after crushing Samford 87-to-51 last Saturday. Penn State comes in at 8-and-4.
Both teams are without their veteran point guards. The Badgers lost Josh Gasser to an A-C-L knee injury just before the season began. The Nittany Lions lost guard Tim Frazier to an Achilles injury in his third game.
Wisconsin now starts sophomore Traevon Jackson at the point. He’s averaging five points and two-and-a-half assists per game. Redshirt freshman George Marshall replaced Gasser at first. Both have been inconsistent, but associate head coach Greg Gard says they’ve done a better job over the past couple of weeks.
Wisconsin had 21 assists and six turnovers against Samford, and coach Bo Ryan said he liked the way the team was making extra passes and good decisions in handling the ball. Ryan says it’s also good to have senior forward Mike Bruesewitz back from a concussion. He missed two games before scoring 13 points in 15 minutes against Samford.
Also tonight, the U-W Milwaukee men will play at Detroit. The U-W Green Bay men are at Wright State. And the Parkside men-and-women are both at Missouri S-and-T.
