Restored South Metro bus Route K up and running

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - The new Metro Ride Route K made its first trip through the South Metro yesterday.

The bus is making semi regular runs through Weston, Schofield and Rothschild throughout the day and is a restoration of some of the service that was lost to budget cuts in 2011. Transit director Greg Seubert says there was some pomp and circumstance for the first run. "NAOMI organized a blessing of the bus and initiated the first trip by having the group ride along."

The bus is taking seven trips daily, with a connection at the North Central Healthcare facility to the rest of the Metro Ride network. The bus route also allow for paratransit service through most of Schofield and Weston to be restored.

The bus service was restored after a referendum in Weston requiring two years of bus service passed but was not funded by residents. Weston's board passed their budget with a special fee on the tax bills to pay for the bus service. Administrator Dan Guild said it was one of the options on the table. "We're planning to fund the bus through a transportation utility. It is a fee that is charged to property owners for the transportation network in the community."

The Administrator says the decision by Schofield and Rothschild to go with the bus service proposal reduced Weston’s financial obligation from $120,000 down to $45,000.
