MADISON, WI (WSAU) - Wisconsin’s Frozen Road law goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday in far northern Wisconsin. This is good news for log haulers and truckers that move road salt and abrasives in Zone 1. This includes state and federal numbered highways north of and including U.S. Highway 8.
The frozen road law allows heavier loads for these trucks, up to 98-thousand pounds with at least five axles compared to the normal 80-thousand pounds. Trucks must still be properly licensed for 80-thousand pounds to take advantage of the temporary limits.
The higher weight limits do not apply to county or local roads unless authorized by the local agency having maintenance authority. Also, higher weights may not be transported on any highways or bridges that are specifically posted for lower weight limits.
Further information on weight restrictions and the Frozen Road declaration can be found on the WisDOT web site at www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/truck/weightrestrictions.htm.
Haulers with specific questions can contact WisDOT’s Oversize/Overweight Permits Unit at (608) 266-7320.
