EAGLE RIVER, WI (WSAU) -  The mild winter weather is taking away one of the northwood’s favorite visitor attractions. The Eagle River Ice Palace will not be built this year. Normally, it is constructed between Christmas and New Year’s Day but it has been too warm.

The Eagle River Chamber of Commerce normally harvests ice from Silver Lake. They need lake ice that’s 14 inches thick, but the ice is only averaging about 9 inches thick.

The Ice Palace has been an 80 year long tradition when the weather permits, and is built along highway 45 near the edge of town.
