MERRILL, Wis. (WSAU) – A proposed Wal-Mart in Merrill is ready to start construction.
Merrill city administrator Dave Johnson says the company has closed the sale of the property across from the current Walmart near Highway 51. "We are now waiting for construction to begin this spring." The new 120,000 square foot store will feature their current full retail store as well as a pharmacy and a supermarket.
In addition, Wal-Mart will be paying for part of the reconstruction of Highway 64 and Pine Ridge Avenue. Merrill will be picking up to $400,000 dollars of the total bill as well. An possible roundabout at that intersection has been ruled out, and the state Department of Transportation will be doing a more conventional reconstruction there.
Construction on the new store is expected to start sometime this year with an opening in the spring of 2014.
