NEW LONDON, WI (WSAU) - A man had to be rescued from the second story of his New London home during a fire Tuesday. Firefighters used a ladder to rescue 41-year-old John Janke, who was hanging from a second floor window trying to escape the blaze.
Janke called in 9-1-1 to alert emergency crews, but didn’t get out in time. He was taken to New London Family Medical Center for treatment of second and third degree burns plus smoke inhalation.
Fire crews were able to get into the burning house and rescue Janke’s dog, which was in a kennel inside the structure.
The flames were contained to an upstairs bedroom, but the damage from fire, smoke and heat is extensive. Investigators believe it started in a wall near a light switch.
The American Red Cross is assisting Janke’s wife and three kids with temporary housing.
