MADISON, WI (WSAU) - Last week’s exposure of a $15-million mistake has officials demanding additional audits of the University of Wisconsin benefit packages.
Overpayments in health insurance premiums combined with the UW paying premiums for 924 people that no longer worked there has prompted two demands for an audit so far. One is from U-W System President Kevin Reilly. He wants both a complete internal audit and an independent external audit of the university’s benefit and retirement payment system.
Another demand for an audit comes from Green Bay area Senator Rob Cowles, who is pushing for Legislative approval yet this week to perform a complete audit.
Of the 15-million lost, only about $228,000 has been recovered. A complete audit could show even more losses, since the UW’s initial findings only covered a span of 17 months.
