WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - The unusually mild winter and small amount of snow is taking its toll on traditional winter events. It’s not just snowmobilers and ice fishing enthusiasts affected by the weird winter.
Some events for the Badger State Winter Games are indoors this weekend and hoping for snow next week.
The Special Olympics Wisconsin has cancelled this weekend’s snowshoe and cross country ski events at Nine Mile Forest, since the trails are bare. They will have alpine skiing and snowboard competition at Granite Peak where there is manmade snow.
Even the American Birkebeiner officials in Hayward have called off this weekends Birkie Tour noncompetitive 25 and 50 kilometer events, and they’re hoping to see snow before the big race weekend February 21st through the 23rd.
The 50th Annual World Championship Snowmobile Derby is on as scheduled in Eagle River, where they maintain the ice oval and make an infield full of snow for their snowcross events.
