STEVENS POINT, Wisc (WSAU) Police officers will not be regularly attending school board meetings in Stevens Point. Officers were at the last meeting, when a large group of teachers attended and asked the board not to extend the contract of superintendent Attila Weninger. The meeting was not unruly.
Police were also asked to attend a committee meeting on January 9. That was because one of the attendees at an earlier committee meeting didn't follow the rules for observers. Some board members thought a police officer might be needed to maintain order.
Police say they attend school meetings only when they're requested. The officers are told to stay at the back of the room and be as unobtrusive as possible.
Police also attend Stevens Point city council meetings when they're requested by the mayor.
