Wisconsin Rapids man remains critical after Saturday shooting accident

PORT EDWARDS, Wis. (WSAU) -  There’s no change in the condition of the Wisconsin Rapids man who was accidentally shot at the Wood County Rifle Range Saturday. The incident happened at about 3:00 p.m. near Port Edwards.

Wood County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Shawn Becker says 25-year-old Joseph Sammartino remains unconscious and in critical condition.

Becker says the victim was walking down to change targets while his father, 53-year-old Stephen Sammartino, was removing a magazine from the rifle.  The weapon fired a round that was in the chamber..

Becker says this is a sad reminder to remember your gun safety rules and treat every firearm as if it is loaded.

Sammartino was flown by Spirit Air Ambulance to Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield for treatment.

Wood County Sheriff's deputies say they are continuing to look into this incident, but are treating it as an accident.
