CRANDON, WI (WXPR) - A Crandon company has been awarded a $2.6 million dollar contract with the city of Alpena, Michigan to build new fully-electric trolleys over the next two years.
Hometown Trolley produces custom trolley buses for the public transit industry. Chief Executive Officer Kristina Pence-Dunow says they were given the opportunity to bid on the Alpena project. Alpena was awarded a grant under the Clean Fuels Act to utilize a platform that did not burn fossil fuels. She says after operation begins in Alpena, the Federal Transportation Authority, or FTA, will monitor the emission results.
The new contract is a reason the company is expanding to larger facilities nearby in the Crandon Industrial Park. She says the move will give the company about double the production space.
Hometown Trolley is Wisconsin's only trolley company. Last month, the company became one of 58 state firms to be nominated to receive the Wisconsin Manufacturer of the Year Award.
