Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson grills Hillary Clinton during Benghazi hearing

WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - Outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave emotional and fierce testimony Wednesday at a Senate hearing on her department’s missteps from the deadly September 11th raid on the U.S. consulate in Libya.

Wisconsin Republican Ron Johnson was among those questioning Clinton at a jam-packed hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He said a “simple phone call” would have determined that the raid which killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and 3 other Americans was not spurred by protests – which U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice had claimed five days after the assault.

Johnson said Americans should have learned the truth much earlier, and he asked why they were misled. After a couple of minutes back and forth, Clinton became exasperated and replied, “What difference, at this point, does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened, and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again.”

Clinton defended Rice and challenged the Republicans’ focus on Rice’s remarks – which were based on intelligence talking points. She said it was more important to find the militants who killed the Americans and bring them to justice.

Clinton said the focus now should be on tougher security at all U.S. missions. She said the State Department is adopting 29 recommendations from an independent review board.

Clinton said the agency is going above and beyond the proposals by focusing on posts with the highest threat levels. She said, “Nobody is more committed to getting this right.”
