STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) - Portage County's first traffic fatality of the year happened on slippery I-39 in Stevens Point Friday.
Portage County deputies managed the crash scene from the northbound lanes of the highway at the Plover River bridge just north of the Highway 10 east and 66 interchange at 12:43 p.m.
A southbound car driven by 23-year-old Emalee Nuessmeier had slid into the end of the guardrail near the bridge. Her 31-year-old male passenger was found unresponsive and trapped inside the vehicle, and pronounced dead at the scene. Nuessmeier was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital in Stevens Point for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Chief Deputy Daniel Kontos says one northbound lane of I-39 was closed for nearly 2 hours. He says neither occupant was wearing their seatbelt.
Excessive speed for the adverse weather conditions is considered to be the primary factor in the cause of the crash.
