MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) - A refinery in Superior and it’s parent company are considering shipping crude oil on the Great Lakes.

Jennifer Straumins is the President of Calumet Specialty Product Partners of Indianapolis, Indiana. Straumins says they are looking into construction of a crude oil loading dock to bring in more heavy crude from Canada. She says the project would also give refineries access to light crude from western states like North Dakota and Montana.

If Calumet Specialty Product Partners goes ahead with the loading dock, it could be operational by early 2015.

Several environmental groups have opposed bringing a pipeline to the Superior refinery. Many of these same groups have already begun to voice opposition to shipping oil on the Great Lakes, as well.
