BATTLE CREEK, MI (WSAU-Woodchucks) -- The Wisconsin Woodchucks defeated the Battle Creek Bombers Tuesday in dramatic fashion as a ninth-inning home run by Josh Goossen-Brown propelled the team to a 5-4 victory.
The Woodchucks did not hold a lead the entire game until the top of the ninth. Goossen-Brown’s first home run of the game sailed over the deep left-field wall at C.O. Brown Stadium to put the Woodchucks on top 5-4. Max Ising would come on in the ninth to close the door for his second save of the season as he struck out the side. The Bombers would break open the scoring against Woodchucks starter Ryan McCarthy in the bottom of the second. With Greg Velazquez on second and one out, A.J. Kennedy singled to left field. Rob Bennie’s throw from left field almost gunned down Velazquez, but Velazquez got around the tag to record the first run of the game. After Bombers starter Alex Tukey held the Woodchucks scoreless in the top of the third, the Bombers offense would get back on the board in the bottom of the frame. Cam Gibson scored on a single by Matt Fears, and Rouric Bridgewater would come around to score on a double by Greg Velazquez to extend the Bomber lead to three runs.
The Bombers would tack on one run in the fifth, but then the Woodchucks began their comeback. With one out in the sixth, Matt Tellor singled to right field to score Jake Jefferies from third base and get the Woodchucks on the scoreboard. Tellor would later score on a base hit by Bennie, and John Clay Reeves scored on a Garrett Rucker single to make it a one-run ballgame.
The ‘Chucks would tie the game back up in the seventh. After Tellor doubled with two outs, a Joe Serrano error extended the inning, and the Woodchucks would capitalize. With Tellor on third, Josh Goossen-Brown dropped a single into right field to score Tellor and tie the game at four runs apiece. Parker Danciu would pick up the win to improve to 1-0 on the season.
The ‘Chucks and Bombers will be back at it Wednesday starting at 6:05 CDT for the second and final game of the series before the two teams head back to Wausau for a doubleheader Thursday at Athletic Park.
