Report: Over 112,000 Wisconsin kids attended private schools in 2011

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Over 112,000 Wisconsin youngsters attended private K-12 schools in the fall of 2011.

That’s according to a new report released today by the U.S. Education Department.

It said 5,400 Wisconsinites graduated from private schools in 2011. We do not know the graduation rate.

The government said it did not have enough data to determine how many Wisconsin 9th graders earned diplomas from the same schools. That’s the same formula used in determining public high school graduation rates.

Nationally, 98 percent of private school seniors ended up graduating.

Of the nation’s 31,000 private schools, the Education Department said just over two-thirds are religious in nature.

In Wisconsin, critics of the recent school choice expansion say private schools should be required to keep the same data on their performance as public schools. The new state budget includes a limited statewide choice program, in which youngsters can get tax-funded vouchers to attend private schools if their parents believe their public schools are not up to snuff.

Until now, only Milwaukee County and Racine schools were in the choice program.
