WI Supreme Court rules volunteer firefighter can't run red light

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The Wisconsin Supreme Court said a volunteer firefighter had no right to drive through a red light while on his way to a call, because his vehicle did not have a siren.

The justices ruled Tuesday against Parnell Burditt, a volunteer for the Okauchee Fire Department in Waukesha County.

He was on his way to an emergency call in 2008 when he drove through a red light on a four-lane divided highway – and he struck a vehicle in which two passengers were injured.

Burditt claimed he was immune from being sued under a state law which gives liability protections to emergency responders.

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Burditt still had to stop at the red light, because his truck did not have an audible signal like a siren.
