Wausau hires animal control officer for new program

by

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- The City of Wausau and several other partnering municipalities have made the next step in implementing the new animal control program.  What began as "Mary's Law" to cut down on animal control problems is going to be a functioning program in less than two weeks.

First of all, Wausau’s City Council voted Tuesday to allocate certain forfeitures collected by the city to the Animal Control Fund. That totals $118,450.

Second, Human Resources Director Michael Loy says a staffing decision has been made. “We just hired an animal control officer that’s going to be starting July 22nd, and we’re really happy to have her here and get that program kicked off and started.”

The city hired Wausau resident Ashley Bishop as the Animal Control Officer, and she Loy says like other city officers, Bishop has been through a very thorough background check.

Loy says they will get Bishop acquainted with people in Wausau, Weston, and about a dozen other municipalities contracting for animal control services. They will also get her some help. “The plan is to supplement her position with two paid part-time CSO (Community Service Officers) that will help in animal control efforts with the city of Wausau, and all of the other municipalities that we work with on animal control.”

Loy says a specific date has not been determined for adding the part-time community service officers to assist animal control efforts.
