Lawsuits filed against Milwaukee cops for illegal strip searches

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - Two civil lawsuits have been filed by five men who claim they were illegally strip-searched by Milwaukee police officers.

The cases were filed in federal court. They allege numerous civil rights violations which include false arrests and excessive force.

The action comes after former Milwaukee officer Michael Vagnini was sentenced in June to 26 months in prison for conducting illegal strip searches.

Criminal trials are also pending against three other Milwaukee officers, after an investigation in which 30 victims claimed they had their bodies and cavities searched. Illegal drugs were reportedly being sought in the many of the incidents.

The five plaintiffs said the illegal strip searches were allowed to continue with no consequences to the officers involved.

Seven other victims have filed preliminary claim notices. Civil suits have not been filed in those cases yet.

Last year, a teenager from Beloit filed suit over a strip search by Milwaukee Police. The city ended up paying $265,000 to settle that case.
