MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - University of Wisconsin System President Kevin P. Reilly is leaving. Reilly confirmed the rumors today by announcing he will become an advisor the the American Council on Education beginning in January 2014 and he will also return to teaching.
Reilly has served the system for the past nine years, and sees his new position as a challenge to help move higher education forward while preserving its best traditions. The American Council on Education represents the presidents of accredited degree granting institutions in the United States.
Reilly was Chancellor of the UW Extension from 2000 until 2004 before taking his current post. Although Reilly took heat from state legislators after the recent discovery of surplus UW funds, Reilly is credited with the growth and strength of the UW system and his efforts with creating the UW Flexible Option program for working adults.
