WAUSAU, WI (WRIG-WOODCHUCKS) - The Wisconsin Woodchucks would hang on to beat the Battle Creek Bombers 6-5 as Tyler Steib and Matt Tellor both drive in two runs.
Battle Creek would strike early in the top half of the first inning. A two-out single from Bombers second baseman Matt Fears and a double from Bombers third baseman Derek Hasenbeck would put runners in scoring position. Matt Goodson would then drive both runners in with a ground ball up the middle giving the Bombers a 2-0 advantage.
The Woodchucks cut the deficit to one after the bottom of the first inning after Matt Tellor would advance to third on a dropped third strike when Bombers catcher Drew Carlile would airmail a throw into right field. Jake Peter would drive the first pitch he has seen in a Woodchucks jersey this season into the left-center field gap for a two-out triple driving in Tellor.
Tyler Steib would continue his hot streak with a two-out double off the right field wall that would drive in Madison Carter and Jimmy Correnti. Matt Tellor would continue his hot start building on his Northwoods League leading 14 RBI after hitting a single into right field driving in Steib from second base, giving the Woodchucks a 4-2 advantage in the bottom of the second inning.
Joey Rodriguez would give the Woodchucks an insurance run now to lead 5-2, when he stole third base and Bombers catcher Drew Carlilie would throw it behind Rodriguez. However, nobody for the Bombers would be covering second base on the play allowing Rodriguez to score.
Tellor would continue to build on his NWL RBI lead again in the bottom of the fourth inning when he would hit a sacrifice fly to left field allowing Tyler Steib to score on the play now giving the Woodchucks a 6-2 lead.
After getting one run in the top half of the sixth inning, the Bombers would try to rally in the top of the eighth inning trailing 6-3. After a single from Clayton Truex and a double from Jackon Glines, Drew Carlile would follow with a double into the left center gap to shorten the lead to 6-5 still in favor of the Woodchucks. Woodchucks pitcher Aaron Fossas would strike out Bombers designated hitter Tyler Sullivan with the tying and go-ahead run on second and third.
Matt Thomas settled down from those two first-inning runs in his Woodchucks debut. Thomas would only surrender those two runs while giving up just four hits while striking out seven batters.
