MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's school of journalism and mass communications says he was "flabbergasted" by a recent motion by the legislature's joint finance committee.
The provision on the budget would deny the Center for Investigative Journalism from operating in any building leased or owned by the Board of Regents.
Director Greg Downey says the program, which receives no funding from the university, is innovative and helps chart a future for investigative reporting. He adds that the University is concerned with the provision because it's an academic freedom issue.
Republican State Senator Dale Schultz calls the provision "petty" and says he will try to remove it.
